HUNGARIAN NATIONAL DANCE ENSEMBLE:
COMPROMISE /150

The ideas of the 1848 War of Independence, with the subdual of the revolution, are now lost. Kossuth is in emigration, Batthyány's last word at the scaffold: Long live the homeland!
As a result of the ensuing, almost paralyzing, protest against the oppression affecting almost all layers of society, the only possible way of protest was turning to, and the increased attention to, national poetry, music, song and peasant culture. With the Compromise dating back to exactly 150 years, the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy was established, which brought a huge economic boost to the people of Hungary. It was only twenty years later, in 1896, it was possible to organize the Millennial Exhibition of the thousand-year old Hungary in the reconstructed Városliget in Budapest. Ethnographic landscapes of Hungary and their peasantry have never been given such an opportunity to present their culture and way of life. We wish to remember this era, so important for the Hungarian history, in the language of folklore.

According to the creators, it is only László Seregi who succeeded to show Shakespeare's works in the art of dance. Based on the perpetual thoughts of the playwright, the young choreographers have decided to imagine the essence of three Shakespeare dramas on stage and tell them in modern dance, performed by the chorus line of the Madách Theatre.
The 400-year-old truths of Love and Existence can still be found in ourselves, just like the immortal actors of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo and Juliet, and Kiss Me, Kate!...

The show was dreamed and put on stage by two excellent solo dancers of the ensemble, Zsolt Antal and László Péter. It is a peculiarity that this piece persents the sung and danced heritage of two adjoining and interconnected, but so different, landscapes, Felcsík and Gyimes, giving the viewer the opportunity to explore the many hidden common features that only a few know, even though the peculiarities of two neighbouring areas can be distinguished at first sight. Starting from the most striking one, from the appearance of the costumes to the structure and location of the settlements: while in the Felcsík, the houses are clustered on the plain along the Olt river, in Gyimes they are scattered mostly in the narrow valleys of the mountain, in the creeks. The audience can see the most authentic forms of this legacy in Transylvania, in Hungary, or anywhere in the world, performed by the Hargita Ensemble. At the same time, the two communities, from Csík and Gyimes, can be brought closer together, placing their similarities over differences.

This story is not about a nice family who is waiting at a station.
We were 3 years old when we disappeared.
We've been living here in this closed place for 123 years, which is known by the people as The Station.
We know exactly who we were then, and what we have become.
Escape if you can!
Play with me if you dare!
Do we know exactly who we were then, and what we have become?
